What Plan Am I In?

Nearly all 32BJ members who have training benefits are covered by the Shortman Fund. The Local 2 Safety Fund merged into the Shortman Fund on July 1, 2006. The North Training Fund merged into the Shortman Fund on August 1, 2008. .

This is a general guide to assist you in identifying your training fund. Please check with your union delegate/steward, consult your contract or call Member Services 212-388-3500 if you are unsure of which fund may cover you.

Who is covered by the Shortman fund?

Your benefits are determined by the collective bargaining agreement negotiated between your union, Local 32BJ SEIU, and your employer. The Shortman Fund covers most part- time and full-time members working in:

    • Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens or Staten Island, including residential, commercial and
      window cleaning
    • Security Officers in New York City and New Jersey
    • Public Schools in New York City
    • The Bronx (except for Coop City, most members do not have scholarship eligibility)
    • New Jersey
    • Long Island
    • Westchester and the Hudson Valley in New York State
    • Washington, DC and Montgomery County commercial buildings
    • Many government buildings in the Washington, DC area
    • New Haven, CT

    On January 1, 2009, members in Baltimore, MD will be eligible for Shortman Fund benefits.

    On July 1, 2011, members in Hartford and Fairfield County, CT will become eligible for the Shortman Fund.

    Other Training Funds Covering Members of Local 32BJ:

    • Effective July 1, 2006, the Local 2 Safety Fund merged with the Shortman Training Fund.
      The Local 2 safety and apprenticeship program continues, but participants are eligible
      for all Shortman fund benefits.
