I am a new employee. How long is the waiting period before my benefits become effective?
Your benefits are determined by the collective bargaining agreement or contract negotiated between your union, SEIU Local 32BJ, and your employer. The waiting period is typically 90, 120 or 180 days. For details about your specific waiting periods, you can contact Member Services at 212-388-3500.
Will I be covered if I take a voluntary leave?
You are usually not covered if you are on a voluntary, unpaid leave. If you are taking a leave of absence, you and your eligible dependents will become eligible for COBRA continuation. You may have continued coverage at no charge to you if your leave is due to disability or FMLA.
Will my benefits cover my family members?
If your contract entitles you to family coverage, you can add your spouse and children as defined under the rules of your plan to your Health and Legal Fund coverage. For specific eligibility rules, please refer to the SPD for your plan or contact Member Services at 212-388-3500.
Do I have to pay to cover my dependents?
If your contract provides family coverage, in most cases you can add your eligible dependents to your coverage at no cost to you.
When does my coverage end if I lose my job?
Generally, you are covered for 30 days after you stop working. You may be able to continue health coverage at your own cost under COBRA. If you are disabled, extended health coverage may be available at no cost. See your SPD.
